JE (MCP-1), also known as chemokine (C-C motif) ligand 2 (CCL2), is a member of the CC chemokine family that is a chemotactic agent for mononuclear cells. JE (MCP-1) is produced by endothelial cells, smooth muscle cells, and monocytes in response to several atherogenic stimulants such as interleukin-1β (IL-1β), platelet derived growth factor (PDGF), CD40 ligand and oxidized low density lipoprotein. CCL2 induces histamine release by basophils, and enzyme and cytokine release by monocytes, NK cells and lymphocytes. CCL2-mediated recruitment of monocytes to sites of inflammation plays important roles in the pathology of atherosclerosis, multiple sclerosis and allergic asthma.
The murine JE (MCP-1) cDNA encodes a 148 aa protein with a 23 aa signal sequence. Human CCL2 induces a limited response in rodent cells, and mouse CCL2 has full activity on human cells. Recombinant murine JE (MCP-1) is a 13.8 kDa protein containing 125 amino acid residues.
